Art:walk festival: Museum night at the SchifffahrtMuseum
On Museum Night, everything in the castle tower revolves around historic Rhine steam navigation. In addition to the cabinet exhibition, a colourful postcard workshop, Rhine travellers of bygone times and a historical board game with a view await you in the café.
The SchifffahrtMuseum is located directly on the Rhine embankment promenade, in the castle tower, the only surviving part of the Residenzschloss. Seven floors can be explored, from the lowest vault to the viewing floor in the lantern. In addition to the exhibition on the Rhine and Rhine navigation, a varied programme is offered during the museum night:
"200 years of KD - stories, faces, secrets"
Cabinet exhibition
The Köln-Düsseldorfer Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt (KD) is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, the SchifffahrtMuseum is presenting an exciting anniversary exhibition in cooperation with the KD and the Rheinisch-Westfälisches Wirtschaftsarchiv zu Köln (RWWA) foundation. It presents captivating stories, faces and secrets from this 200-year history of Rhine shipping and allows visitors to delve deep into the formative past of KD. 1st floor: 16:00-00:00
"A line in a hurry"
Postcard workshop
At the end of the 19th century, artistically designed postcards with views of travel destinations and a handwritten greeting were sent out and new printing techniques made it possible to reproduce colourful works of art. In this workshop, historical postcard motifs relating to steam navigation on the Rhine can be creatively coloured using watercolour pencils and brushes. 2nd floor: 16:00-00:00
"A dare without need"
Costume performance
On this evening, figures from the early 19th century appear in the SchifffahrtMuseum, when the first steamships travelled across the Rhine with smoking chimneys and roaring paddle wheels. In this costume performance, a scene from the founding period of the Rhenish steamship companies comes to life. 3rd floor: 16:30-23:30 (every 45 min.)
"Culinary delights in the café"
Special
The café on the viewing floor of the castle tower, the Laterne, offers savoury German and Italian snacks as well as a breathtaking view of the passing ships on the Rhine and the rooftops of the old town. You can also try out a historical board game about steamboats on the Rhine.
