B) Curator's tour through the exhibition: The power of encounter - Düsseldorf meets Japan
5:00 pm
The Cecilien-Gymnasium, the Japanische Internationale Schule e.V. in Düsseldorf and the Stadtmuseum have joined forces to artistically explore the connection between Düsseldorf and Japan together with the pupils of both schools. The background to the project is not only that the two schools have been friends for many years, but also that Düsseldorf is an important location for Japan throughout Europe with around 6,700 Japanese people living here and around 400 companies. Every day, encounters take place in the state capital in a variety of ways: for example, as part of co-operations, private friendships, when visiting Japanese restaurants and shops or during a visit to Japan Day Düsseldorf/NRW, the largest Japanese cultural and encounter festival in Europe. These connections are characteristic of our city, which signed a partnership agreement with Chiba Prefecture in 2019. The students from both schools have now not only devoted themselves to various aspects of the topic and a wide variety of artistic techniques as part of their lessons, but have also experienced Japanese-German encounters at first hand: sometimes directly through the realisation of joint art projects and sometimes through media, excursions and trips - encounters were and are the focus of this exhibition!

JAPAN - GEGENWART: A solo piano evening with literary excursions
Piano concert for Japan-Tag at the Stadtmuseum
7:00 pm
As part of the intercultural concert series "Musikraum Welt" with the pianist Aleksandar Filić, guests can look forward to a concert at the Stadtmuseum on Japan Day, the occasion for which is the close and long-standing connection between Japan and Düsseldorf - the largest Japanese community in Germany lives here. In 2019, the long-standing relationship developed into a partnership with Chiba Prefecture. The area around Immermannstraße, with its Japanese shops and restaurants, is also known as Little Tokyo. A large number of Japanese companies are based in and around Düsseldorf, but cultural exchange is just as lively and important as economic exchange - as evidenced, for example, by the annual Japan Day with numerous visitors from near and far.
Today's concert programme presents Japanese composers of the 20th and 21st centuries such as Yojiro Minami, who lives in Düsseldorf, Toru Takemitsu and Joe Hisaishi. We want to give a brief overview of the various styles of contemporary Japanese art music, including the film music of Ghibli animation films. The music programme will be complemented by readings of modern Japanese poetry by authors such as Kôichi Kihara, Hiromi Ito and Yoko Tawada.
The project is being organised in cooperation with the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf.
