Japanese Min’yô Folk Songs Reimagined
Performers:
SATÔ Kôki (shakuhachi flute, shinobue flute)
ASANO Shô (Tsugaru shamisen, vocals)
HOMMA Takashi (25-string koto)
The three musicians Satô Kôki, Asano Shô, and Homma Takashi founded MIKAGE PROJECT in December 2020 with the goal of musically re-arranging Japan’s traditional Min’yô folk songs and thus making them accessible to future generations.
Since its founding, the band has released four EPs. As part of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and the ASEAN countries, MIKAGE PROJECT performed its first overseas concerts in Thailand and Malaysia and collaborated with local musicians on site. Since 2024, Asano Shô has co-hosted the radio program “Deai wa! Min’yôbi” (“Encounters on Min’yô Day”) on NHK-FM alongside singer Moriguchi Hiroko, for which MIKAGE PROJECT has contributed the opening and closing music.
Further performances abroad have taken the band to Otakon 2024 in Washington, D.C., as well as to Rome and Bologna this year to mark the 160th anniversary of Japanese-Italian relations. In May 2026, they will visit Germany for the first time.
On May 20, the band will perform at the Japanese-German Center in Berlin. Finally, on May 23, 2026, MIKAGE PROJECT will be featured as the highlight act before the fireworks on the main stage at Burgplatz during Japan Day Düsseldorf/NRW, starting around 10 p.m.
