A young princess, cursed to sleep for 100 years, surrounded by thorns and roses: the fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty has gone through many different versions over the centuries, from Charles Perrault to the Brothers Grimm and Disney.
To this day, it is one of the best-known and most popular fairytale stories.
In the ballet world, "Sleeping Beauty" is regarded alongside "Swan Lake" and "The Nutcracker" as a milestone in the dance history of the successful duo Marius Petipa and Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Since its premiere in 1890, the work has been performed all over the world in reconstructed or new versions. One reason for this is undoubtedly Tchaikovsky's emotional, multi-coloured score, which the composer himself considered to be one of his best.
Bridget Breiner now dares to take a look at this great work of the ballet repertoire. Focussing on the Grimm original and the psychology of the characters, the result is a piece that fuses contemporary narrative forms with the magic of ballet in all its sophistication.
