Sustainability at Visit Düsseldorf
Live close Feel free: Düsseldorf is a cosmopolitan and open-hearted city on the Rhine.. Our top priority is to make our city attractive for tourists and residents alike, and to encourage them to visit Düsseldorf. In order to ensure that Düsseldorf remains fit for the future, we are boldly tackling new projects and thinking outside the box - especially when it comes to sustainability. We work hand in hand with our partners and strive to constantly develop further. Because we know that sustainable tourism can only be achieved together.
Sustainability in tourism
The challenges of the future, such as climate change and scarcity of resources, require us to rethink and act sustainably in all areas of life - including tourism.
Responsible tourism aligns the needs of today with those of tomorrow. It is sustainable when it is environmentally sound, socially equitable and economically beneficial. Conscious travel is just as important as promoting local cultures and making a fair contribution to the economy.
So why is sustainability in tourism so important?
Environmentally: Tourism can have a significant impact on the environment, for example through CO2 emissions, pollution and resource consumption. Sustainable tourism seeks to minimise these impacts and thus protect the environment.
Socially: Tourism can contribute to local development and improve the quality of life of people in destinations. Sustainable tourism attaches particular importance to fair local working conditions, the involvement of the local population and the promotion of culture and traditions.
Economically: Tourism can maximise economic factors such as foreign exchange earnings and employment, while minimising negative impacts. Sustainable tourism aims to use resources efficiently and to increase fair trade and local value creation in order to make the tourism industry crisis-proof in the long term.
What has happened so far...
Every long journey begins with one small step. This also applies to our journey towards sustainability. We have already taken several steps to reduce our environmental and social footprint:
ÖKOPROFIT: We have been a certified ÖKOPROFIT company since 2023 and are committed to continuously improve our environmental performance. As part of the ÖKOPROFIT programme of the City of Düsseldorf, we have carried out extensive internal data collection to identify potential savings. By participating in sustainability workshops, we have been able to gather new knowledge and pass it on to our employees.
Environmental Action Day: Every year we organise an Environmental Action Day to encourage our employees to implement environmental protection measures in their daily work.
Leitlinien: Wir haben gemeinsam Leitlinien festgelegt, die die Grundsätze unseres nachhaltigen Handelns definieren und unser umweltfreundliches Verhalten im Alltag festhalten.
Guidelines: We have jointly developed a policy that defines the principles of our sustainable actions and sets out how we behave in an environmentally responsible manner on a day-to-day basis.
- The aim of Visit Düsseldorf is to position and market Düsseldorf as a tourist destination in a competitive environment together with Düsseldorf's tourism service providers. To achieve this, we rely on cooperation with stakeholders and an intact environment. We are therefore committed to taking sustainability into account in all our business activities.
- We comply with laws, regulations and official requirements and are committed to continuously improving our operational environmental performance.
- Protecting the environment is essential to providing an attractive Düsseldorf for our employees, citizens, visitors and future generations.
- We want to motivate our employees to behave in an environmentally friendly manner and involve them in our sustainability activities. Suggestions, ideas and thoughts are always welcome.
- When purchasing products and services, we look at environmental aspects such as reducing packaging waste, regionality and respect for human rights.
- The money saved by participating in the ÖKOPROFIT project is invested in corporate projects for environmental and social sustainability.
Klimapakt (Climate Pact): We are a signatory to the Düsseldorf Climate Pact and have pledged to actively support the state capital on its path to climate neutrality by 2035. Among other things, we are currently drawing up a carbon footprint and developing measures to continuously reduce our CO2 emissions and consumption of energy and resources.
