Six open-air events for an unforgettable summer

Classic cars, concerts, cinema: experience outstanding events in the open air!

There are evenings that feel so perfect that you try to hold on to every minute, even every second. You experience hours in which you would give anything to prolong them just a little longer - for example, because the song you hear alongside your loved one touches you to the core. Or because of the choreography you watch on stage at "Goldmucke" events, for example, which miraculously awakens long-hidden feelings in you. You might also discover unexpected things in common when you watch a movie with old friends on the banks of the Rhine - only to catch one of the most spectacular sunsets of all time on the horizon shortly afterwards. You will hopefully experience these and many similar moments in abundance this summer, especially as Düsseldorf offers a whole range of promising outdoor cultural activities. Here is a selection.

Sound enjoyment in the courtyard garden

When an event has existed for 58 years now, it rightly has legendary status, don't you think? The Hofgarten concerts are one of the best ways to make the most of the summer months. Since June and right through to September, the The park is transformed from a green space into a concert area, including a music pavilion. The performances are only canceled during heavy thunderstorms, otherwise on eight Sundays it's time to bring a picnic blanket or folding chair, wine in one hand and a cheese skewer in the other and listen to bigbandfriends (July 2), who offer a wide-ranging cross-section of the big band repertoire with classic big band swing, soul, funk, Latin and themes from film scores, alongside the rustling of the treetops. One more reason to relax in the courtyard garden: the mood-setting performance by Intakt, the big band of the VHS Düsseldorf (July 30). The Wimmer.Band (September 10) is a Düsseldorf band that mixes Rhenish dialect with modern, rocking sounds and invites the audience to join in the party with its open-minded style. If that doesn't sound tempting!

You can find the event dates here.

Funfair with concerts

Rollercoaster rides that will make your stomach turn with joy, enjoying candy floss as if there were no tomorrow (especially for your teeth), winning the XXL teddy bear at the shooting range: When Düsseldorf once again descends into a state of emergency, almost four million people celebrate the Rheinkirmes. From July 14 to 23, not only familiar and new rides and deliciously unhealthy food will attract visitors to the fairground in Oberkassel. Small concerts also take place in parallel in the marquees of the many participating breweries - so that there's no end to the communal swaying! We bet: By the end of the spectacle with more than 300 exhibitors, you'll want to wear the gingerbread heart with the "I love you, Düsseldorf" inscription all year round. Even at night. The highlight of the funfair is the spectacular fireworks display on Friday, July 21, which starts at 11 pm this year. The best place to watch it is from the entire Rhine embankment promenade.

Rocking out on the city beach

You can't make it on vacation because of all the papers piling up on your desk? You can't go on vacation because Billy the poodle can't get a place at the kennel and you'd rather stay at home? No need to despair, on the contrary! Rejoice that you can spend the summer in Düsseldorf and therefore on the city beach. That way, the fear of missing out is completely unfounded. Instead, you can relax in the deckchairs on the Oberkassel Bridge and listen to the finest live music, poetry slams or watch a drag show for free. The light blue containers, which serve as a stage and food stalls, add the finishing touches to the "urban jungle" atmosphere. You can find out who is performing when in the "Program" highlight on the Instagram channel @stadtstrandduesseldorf.

"Film off!" on the Rhine

It will probably be a while before we can perceive smells via the TV or movie screen. But as far as the perfect soundscape - and even sensory experiences - are concerned, you'll find yourself in the perfect place at the open-air cinema on the Rheinweise. From July 20 to August 20, the cinema sponsored by tour operator Alltours offers you movie nights with classics and audience-acclaimed films from the recent past. With a bag of fresh popcorn in your hand and a cold drink at the ready, nothing stands in the way of a special evening. And maybe the stars will even twinkle.

VierLinden Open-Air

Music quiz and rock and pop in the VierLinden Open-Air beer garden. Haven't heard of it yet? At the individual music and culture live shows presented by GoldMucke, great artists await you in Düsseldorf - such as the rock-pop of SCHIMMERLING & CHARLY KLAUSER (June 22) or the indie rock of LEAP (June 27) and many more. But it's not just music fans who get their money's worth at VierLinden. Towards evening, the VierLinden Open Air is transformed into a movie theater.

You can find all information at goldmucke.de or VierLinden Open-Air.

Classic Days

What would you treat yourself to if you won the lottery? Many people immediately invest in real estate, a few big bucks and, of course, a fancy sports car. Almost even better than a car that has just rolled off the assembly line: a real classic that was already driving around the streets of this country when most of us weren't even thinking about it. If you don't own the millions yet, but would like some inspiration just in case, take a look at the Classic Days. From Ferrari and Mercedes to Porsche, the most beautiful models of days gone by are on display here. According to the organizers, the "biggest classic car summer garden party" will delight its guests from 4 to 6 August at the P1 trade fair parking lot, with 14 event areas covering "historic automobiles, old racing cars as well as life and drive style". Incidentally, this year marks the 16th time that the German's favorite means of transport will be on display. And maybe you'll bump into a racing legend or two this time too - just to swap a few tips when you get into the business yourself. Or in your new old dream car.
