Tonhalle Düsseldorf (Concert hall)
Originally the architect Wilhelm Kreis who had also designed the adjacent Ehrenhof designed the Tonhalle (formerly Rheinhalle) as a planetarium in 1925.
Beschreibung
However, around 50 years after its opening in 1926, the expressionist round building was given a new use: it became a concert hall. Since then, international stars of all genres, from classical music to jazz, from chanson to soul, from piano to cabaret, have held a rendezvous under the imposing dome. The special architecture of the Tonhalle (Concert hall) results in excellent acoustics. The hall was modernised in 2005. This is enjoyed not only by the 130 members of the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, for whom the Tonhalle is their musical home, but also by the three in-house youth orchestras. Over 300,000 culture lovers and families visit the 450 events such as concerts, family music weekends and other educational programmes every year.
