The rose-ringed parakeets are squawking it from the plane trees along Königsallee boulevard: climate change is in full swing! How can we boost urban climate resilience? What plans do they have in Düsseldorf, and how is their blue-green infrastructure already improving the city’s climate? A climate-themed tour that takes in the Rhine, Königsallee and the largest green facade in Europe.
Eight kilometres of hornbeam hedge provide the same ecological benefit as 80 deciduous trees! Setting European standards with its green exteriors, the Kö-Bogen II ensemble, also known as Ingenhoven Valley, was completed in 2021.
Historical climate architecture can also have a positive impact on the microclimate, as demonstrated by the results of Napoleon’s ‘beautification decree’, which include leafy Königsallee boulevard and the redesign of the Hofgarten, Düsseldorf’s oldest public park.
In addition to showing you shady retreats and hotspots of climate-adapted infrastructure, our tour guides also draw a line from the past to the future. How do green tram and train tracks help to keep cities cool? Which trees have made it onto Düsseldorf’s list of ‘trees of the future’? And how does the ‘Blaugrüner Ring’ urban development project endeavour to combine culture and climate? Our climate tour gets you up to speed.
