Thomas Schütte (born 1954) is one of the most internationally renowned artists of our time and lives in Düsseldorf.
Following a series of highly acclaimed solo exhibitions, including one at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is dedicating a comprehensive exhibition to him, produced in close collaboration with the artist. Schütte’s work is characterised by a critical, often ironic examination of humanity, society and power. He works in various media, including sculpture, watercolour, painting, ceramics, installations and models. Alongside his larger-than-life sculptures, such as ‘Vater Staat’ and ‘Mutter Erde’, the exhibition features works never before seen, straight from the foundry. The exhibition also presents, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of Schütte’s architectural models. The exhibition offers a fresh perspective on Thomas Schütte’s exceptionally diverse body of work and demonstrates how he questions the familiar in order to offer new proposals for the present and the future.
