A strangely classical monument
A strangely classic monument - this is not a description, but the name of a monument that was inaugurated in autumn 2021 on the Rheinwiese in Düsseldorf between the Apollo Varieté and the KIT - Kunst im Tunnel.
Beschreibung
Where many Düsseldorfers like to enjoy the sunset, the broad spectrum of sexual preferences and orientations is commemorated. The four larger-than-life bronze statues by Cologne artist Claus Richter, who are holding hands and looking in all directions while clenching their fists or pointing the Victory sign towards the sky, symbolise gender and sexual diversity and serve as a memorial against discrimination against non-binary people. In this way, the city is taking a clear stand for tolerant coexistence in a favourite place for many Düsseldorfers and is visibly opposing hatred and exclusion of the LGBTQ+ community from afar.
