The artwork commemorates the “Bringing Joseph Beuys home”. The original wooden version from 1996 fell into disrepair and was redesigned in bronze thanks to the commitment of Moritzen and the Düsseldorfer Jonges, the largest local history association in Europe, as well as the Schmäke art foundry. A QR code on the boat leads to further information online. The location near the art academy is significant, as Beuys and his students landed here in 1972 in a symbolic act to protest against his dismissal. A paved “river course” by architect Niklaus Fritschi complements the artwork. Beuys is regarded worldwide as one of the most important action artists of the 20th century and is one of the city's best-known personalities.
