Goethe Museum/Jägerhof Castle
Situated in the idyllic Hofgarten, the Goethe Museum invites visitors to rediscover the literature and art of Goethe’s era and the Romantic period – and to discover what still connects us to Goethe’s work today.
The museum houses the world’s largest private collection of Goethe’s works. It has been based in Düsseldorf for over 70 years. Manuscripts, letters, paintings and drawings make it a special treasure of the German-speaking literary heritage.
The collection is housed in Jägerhof Palace – a historic site that has seen a great deal itself: a princely residence, Napoleon’s quarters, an administrative centre during the Nazi era and a setting for the Bonn Republic. Goethe himself was a frequent guest in the vicinity.
Today, the museum displays unique artefacts in the castle’s elegant rooms, including the world’s largest number of Goethe’s autographs on public display. On fine days, the castle gardens invite visitors to linger, even without a ticket. The highlight of the year is the Goethe Summer Festival on 28 August. The museum also hosts special exhibitions, lectures, concerts and performances. (Source: Goethe Museum Düsseldorf)
