The NRW Youth Wind Philharmonic opens the 21st festival season: 75 talented young musicians brimming with energy and a passion for music.
The symphonic wind orchestra brings together exceptionally talented young people aged between 14 and 24 from across North Rhine-Westphalia. To be part of the orchestra, members have previously demonstrated their musical ability at the regional ‘Jugend musiziert’ competition or during an audition. In the Junge Bläserphilharmonie NRW, they share their enthusiasm for symphonic wind music.
Together with the young organist Kyuhyun Lim and the percussion ensemble Splash NRW, the audience is taken on a journey through visionary soundscapes, spiritual realms and mythical gardens.
The programme opens with ‘Fission’ by John Mackey – an energetic work that brings the explosive power of musical encounter to life. Two ensembles that, at first glance, seem contrasting – the wind orchestra and the organ – come together in a world premiere by Naji Hakim, commissioned especially for this programme: a dialogue between breath and pipe, rhythm and space.
With ‘The Frozen Cathedral’, we enter a soundscape of ice, light and eternity.
To conclude, ‘The Garden of the Hesperides’ by José Suñer Oriola transports us to a dazzling, mythical world beyond the horizon. A cello section joins the wind orchestra, creating a floating, mysterious soundscape that shifts between golden apples, twilight and eternity.
This IDO opening concert opens up new perspectives and celebrates making music together – in all its diversity and vibrancy.
