The Wehrhahn line in Düsseldorf was one of Germany’s largest construction projects at the time. It has been part of Düsseldorf’s underground train network since 2016. The line’s six subterranean stations are also remarkable works of art, individually and as an ensemble, connected not only by rails, but also by the visions of six different artists.
“Art and magic in a German metro” is how the New York Times described the 3.4 kilometre Wehrhahn line when it first opened. Moving the tracks below ground hasn’t just eased the traffic situation in the city centre, it has also provided a new sphere of activity for Düsseldorf as an artistic hub. Discover the fascinating details on this tour!
Six artists for six underground stations – that was the creative concept. In collaboration with the city, with architects and with engineers, former students of the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts have succeeded in embedding art in the everyday lives of more than 50,000 passengers a day using very different ideas.
One underground station becomes a world of sound, another is transformed into a space station, while the next stop offers a poem in steel – or is it a puzzle? Decide for yourself as you contemplate the continuum that provides an aesthetic link between the stations. Enjoy art all the way down the (Wehrhahn) line!
