The exhibition at the K20 of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen on the 40th anniversary of the death of the Russian-French painter will include around 100 works by the painter from all creative phases. The focus will be on his early works, created between 1910 and 1923. Even as a young artist in Paris, Chagall experimented with the styles of Fauvism and Cubism and combined the new stylistic tendencies with Jewish motifs and Russian folklore and thus his Jewish-Orthodox origins, which he reflected on throughout his life. His pictures always tell of everyday life and customs, but also of experiences such as exclusion and pogroms. They deal with the trauma of persecution, but also with the dream of a better life. What is special: The exhibition not only reveals the painterly influences on the painter's early work - the lesser-known, dark and socially critical side of the artist, which has lost none of its relevance to this day, can also be discovered.
