Düsseldorf Jazz Trio featuring Scott Hamilton
There are saxophonists whom you can recognise after just a few notes. Scott Hamilton is certainly one of them.
His warm, exceptionally mellow tenor saxophone tone, his relaxed timing and his unmistakable feel for melody have made him one of the great stylists of classic jazz.
Since emerging on the American jazz scene in the 1970s, Hamilton has remained true to swing and its great traditions. Whilst many of his generation moved in different musical directions, he found his own way back to the great voices of the tenor saxophone – to Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young, but also to Illinois Jacquet, Gene Ammons and Lockjaw Davis. From these influences, he developed a sound all of his own: velvety and powerful, laid-back and elegant, always underpinned by a deep understanding of the blues and swing.
Hamilton has played with and alongside numerous giants of jazz history, including Benny Goodman and Tony Bennett. Yet he is not a musician content to dwell on the past: his improvisations remain fresh, spontaneous and brimming with ideas. The British jazz critic Dave Gelly described precisely this special ability to continually create new, swinging solos from familiar songs. Now Scott Hamilton is once again a guest at Maxhaus Jazz.
He will be accompanied by the fantastically swinging Düsseldorf Jazz Trio, featuring Walfried Böcker (bass), Martin Sasse (piano) and Christian Schröder (drums). The trio performs four times a year at the Maxhaus with a rotating line-up of guests and is a mainstay of Maxhaus Jazz.
