The Clara Maria Sels Gallery has enjoyed a close working relationship and friendship with the American photographer Duane Michals (1932–2026) spanning several decades.
Shortly before his death, Eva Rubinstein and Clara Sels, together with Prof. Dr Stefan Schweizer and Renate Aller, visited the artist at his New York studio. To mark this occasion, the Duane Michals Gallery is dedicating a room to Eva Rubinstein as part of the exhibition. Eva Rubinstein and Duane Michals shared a close artistic exchange, particularly during the 1970s.
The event kicks off on Friday, 28 August 2026, at 7 pm with an exclusive preview at the Clara Maria Sels Gallery. Alongside the launch of the book, the official premiere of the documentary film about Eva Rubinstein will take place here.
The film ‘A conversation with Eva Rubinstein’ was directed by the New York-based photographer Renate Aller and accompanies the book ‘Eva Rubinstein. Photography’, offering a very personal insight into the life and work of the artist, who is now 93 years old.
The renowned New York-based photographer and director Renate Aller directed this intimate film portrait and will be present in person to engage with the audience.
Although Eva Rubinstein is no longer able to make the long journey from New York in person, the photographic artist, who will soon turn 93, will participate interactively in the openings via live video link and welcome the Düsseldorf audience. (Source: J. Schwarz / Galerie Sels)
