Gianni Sammarro: "to be continued"
Showroom Tina Miyake
Ackerstraße 39, 40233 Düsseldorf
From 5 September to 5 December 2026, the Tina Miyake showroom will be exhibiting small-format watercolours by the Düsseldorf-based artist Gianni Sammarro.
For many years now, fashion designer Tina Miyake has been exhibiting visual art alongside the garments she creates in her showroom on Ackerstraße in Düsseldorf. Following a summer break, the next exhibition opens on 5 September. For three months, the space will then showcase works by Düsseldorf-based artist Gianni Sammarro. Born in Haarlem, the Netherlands, he studied under Jannis Kounellis at the Düsseldorf Art Academy after completing his A-levels.
At Tina Miyake’s, Sammarro will be exhibiting small-format watercolours from the ‘Median’ series. Originally created as exercises, these watercolours – measuring 17 by 12 centimetres – were initially more of a by-product, but have taken on a life of their own over time. The works take their cue from press photographs, which the artist uses as templates for small figure studies. “I’m particularly interested in the positioning of the feet, the posture of the hands and body language in general,” explains Sammarro, “which is why I omit the heads for the sake of simplicity”. Following this pattern, hundreds of watercolours have been created over the past few years. From these, the artist composes large tableaux, series or sequences that respond to the specific conditions of the exhibition spaces. In these installations, the artist says, it becomes clear what makes the works interesting to him: “Because there are no faces to draw the viewer’s attention, it becomes evident how interaction takes place through posture, body language and, not least, clothing.” The result is a colourful, playful and, at the same time, unflinching catalogue of social poses.
About Tina Miyake Tina Miyake’s work sees knitwear and Japanese kimono fabrics form a delicate union. In 2002, the Düsseldorf-based designer, who has German-Japanese roots, opened her showroom on Ackerstraße. Miyake crafts her garments on a hand-knitting machine using silk, linen, merino wool or cotton, and combines the knitwear with ornate vintage kimonos, which she imports specially from her father’s homeland.
