Urban and green – that is the city centre’s formula for a successful future! Our guided tour through the regenerated heart of Düsseldorf showcases a remarkable symbiosis of nature and architecture. Explore the cityscape between Königsallee boulevard and Hofgarten Park. Major stops include two of the more recent Düsseldorf landmarks: Kö-Bogen I and II.
To create Düsseldorf’s Neue Mitte (new centre), traffic needed to be banished underground. Now the area near the upper end of Königsallee and around Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz square is dominated by signature works of two prestigious architects, as the elegant curve of Kö-Bogen I by New York’s Daniel Libeskind meets the urban vision of Düsseldorf native Christoph Ingenhoven, whose climate-adapted Ingenhoven Valley (also known as Kö-Bogen II) was completed in 2021. It features the largest green facade in Europe, made up of 30,000 hornbeam bushes.
Right next door is the triangular market hall with its tilted green roof that doubles as a lawn. This public space offers fine views of historical Hofgarten Park and two iconic post-war buildings – the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus theatre and the Dreischeibenhaus office tower. Our guides also point out other unusual perspectives of old and new city structures.
