In ‘While Still’, the Korean artist Lee Seunghoon explores the moment when time becomes an image. Painting and animation merge to create still images that lie somewhere between movement, memory and perception.
Drawing on painting and animation, Lee explores the relationship between movement and stillness. In animation, movement arises from the sequential succession of many individual, static images. Lee conceptually reverses this process and focuses on the individual moment – on those images that pause for an instant and become etched in our memory.
Everyday scenes, fleeting moments and fragments of memory thus become a space between stillness and movement, reality and imagination. The focus is less on telling a specific story than on the experience of time itself and on the question of why some moments disappear, whilst others live on within us as images.
‘While Still’ combines painting and animation, inviting viewers to pause for a moment and experience time not merely as something fleeting, but as something visible and memorable.
The exhibition takes place at ARTERTAIN in Düsseldorf and presents Lee Seunghoon’s artistic work to a local audience in this context for the first time.
