With his organ sonatas, Mendelssohn provided the initial spark for Romantic organ music in 1845. Today, the six sonatas are considered standard works of the organ repertoire.
In some of his sonatas, Mendelssohn incorporated Protestant chorales, such as in the so-called ‘Lord’s Prayer Sonata’, which begins with variations on Martin Luther’s chorale ‘Our Father in Heaven’.
