Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) radically opposed discrimination against women with her art and created a new monumental staging of femininity.
The Kunstpalast is showing her famous female figures, shooting actions, happenings, sculptures and films as well as models of large-scale sculptures in the landscape, focussing on her artistic self-assertion in the midst of a male-dominated scene. "Nanas to power!" - Particularly from today's perspective, Niki de Saint Phalle's individual artistic endeavours and her desire to fundamentally change gender relations resemble those of a feminist activist, even if she never described herself as such.
The exhibition juxtaposes Niki de Saint Phalle with selected works by her contemporaries. In dialogue with artist friends such as Jean Tinguely, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg or Yayoi Kusama and Dorothy Iannone, Niki de Saint Phalle's attitude and her lasting artistic influence become all the clearer.
