The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is presenting Queere Moderne. 1900 to 1950 is the first comprehensive exhibition in Europe to present the pioneering contribution of queer artists to modernism.
With over 130 works - including paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, films, literature and archival material - by 34 international artists, the exhibition project focuses on the first half of the 20th century. It tells an alternative history of modernism, in which queer artists placed themes such as desire, gender and sexuality as well as the politics of self-expression at the centre of their work. It also tells stories of queer life in times of war and resistance. It includes queer artists such as Claude Cahun, Hannah Höch, Jean Cocteau, Romaine Brooks, Marlow Moss and Richmond Barthé.
