With the "GeSoLei" exhibition for health care, social welfare and physical exercise, Düsseldorf became the venue for the largest exhibition of the Weimar Republic in 1926.
A few years after the First World War, it propagated the ideal of a "new, capable human being". The focus was on topics such as medicine, sport, social welfare, hygiene, nutrition and physical culture, complemented by a broad cultural and entertainment programme. Between 8 May and 15 October 1926, over 7.5 million people visited the 400,000 square metre site. The architect and academy professor Wilhelm Kreis designed the ensemble of buildings at the Ehrenhof for this occasion, which still characterises the cityscape today with the Tonhalle, exhibition buildings and Rhine Terrace. Around 20 artists created sculptures, mosaics, murals and glass works. Numerous works are still preserved around the Court of Honour. The exhibition commemorates this important chapter in the city's history one hundred years ago. (Source: Kunstpalast)
