Winfred Gaul (1928–2003) left his mark on post-war German art with his view of non-representational painting as a liberating medium for a new beginning.
Between openness and rigour, expression and symbol, home and the distant: every brushstroke offered him new insights into colour, line, form and their interplay. On display are around 120 paintings and works on paper from the Willi Kemp collection, donated in 2011 – colour, the unifying element, was something Gaul continually rediscovered right up until his death.
