Sustainability
The Düsseldorf Christmas market shows that festive spirit and environmental awareness can go hand in hand. We are setting an example for greater sustainability during Advent with a wide range of measures. This makes the Christmas market not only atmospheric, but also future-oriented.
A key element is the mandatory use of environmentally friendly reusable tableware for all caterers. Food is served exclusively in reusable containers or with minimal outer packaging. Popular snacks such as chips or roasted almonds can still be enjoyed in traditional paper bags. Thanks to a universal return system, the reusable containers can be conveniently returned to any food hut – a simple step that allows all visitors to actively contribute to reducing single-use plastic.
As part of the nationwide initiative Mehrweg.Einfach.Machen , we are working together with many other cities and event organisers to reduce waste and increase sustainability at events.
This is how the reusable system works:
When you purchase food and drinks, a deposit is charged, which you will of course receive back when you return the tableware. You can return the tableware to any hut that issues tableware. It does not have to be the stand where you purchased your food. For organisational reasons, a maximum of five items per person can be returned at a time.
What has become a given for many makes a big difference: every plate that is reused saves energy, water and CO₂. This allows us to enjoy the Christmas market together – in a festive, responsible and future-oriented way.
In addition, the Christmas market is committed to fighting food waste. In cooperation with FoodSharing and the Too Good To Go platform, hut operators have the opportunity to pass on leftover food in a sustainable manner. This initiative not only promotes responsible behaviour, but also sends an important signal for environmental protection.
