Jung Sik Lee: They, Them and Them
Yet the exhibition does not confine itself to depicting individual cases of identity. It also reveals universal human gestures – giving oneself over to love, to be loved, and to survive despite the burden of making a living.
The “they” in the title does not refer solely to a specific counterpart within Korean society. They are you and me, us and the others. They may appear separate, but ultimately it is a name that anyone can bear. The four videos in this exhibition begin with the confession of a single person, Jung Sik Lee, and arrive in Germany as the story of a universal human being.
Who are they?
Who are we, who call them “they”?
And at what moment do I find myself among them?
Jung Sik Lee does not objectify ‘them’ from the outside. Even though he himself belongs to them, he steps back for a moment to observe, and then returns to this space. Within this shifting perspective, the artist does not confine himself to depicting individual suffering. Rather, he exposes the language and structures of society that label certain people as “them”, separate them from one another and ultimately exclude them. (Text: Kim Hyun)
