Long ago, when Japan was still covered in forests and animal gods roamed the earth, the young prince Ashitaka (voiced by Billy Crudup) was injured on his arm by a wild boar. What sounds harmless is a death sentence for the heir to the throne. After all, the boar was no ordinary animal, but a vengeful god who had become a demon out of hatred for all humans. Ashitaka bravely decides to face his seemingly inevitable fate and leaves his village in the hope of finding a way out. His journey takes him to a settlement where workers, led by their leader Lady Eboshi (Minnie Driver), are cutting down the forests and mining iron ore in the mountains. However, the inhabitants of the forest, especially the wolf goddess Moro and her human adopted daughter San (Princess Mononoke) (Claire Danes), put up fierce resistance against the destruction of their habitat. Soon Ashitaka finds himself caught between the fronts of a war...
