The 1920s at the theatre: discover the awakening of stage art alone or with a guide. The TMD and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf celebrate 100 years of stage design professorships - from painted backdrops to colourful, modern stage spaces.
The spirit of optimism of the 1920s not only had a lasting impact on fashion and architecture, but also on theatre. In this event, you can discover the advances of that time - on your own or as part of a guided tour. Together with the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, the TMD is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the stage design professorship. With the appointment of Walter von Wecus as the first professor of stage design in 1926, the spirit of the Weimar Republic found its way into the theatre world. The stage became a mirror of the visual zeitgeist: instead of painted backdrops, modern stage spaces with bold colours and geometric shapes were created. The costumes also picked up on the fashionable trends of the 1920s and transferred them to the theatrical design. This makes it possible to experience how the theatre radically renewed itself and became a field of experimentation for new forms of artistic expression. (Source: Art:walk Festival)
