Event as part of the Art:walk Festival
The 1920s at the theatre: discover 100 years of stage design professorship with the TMD and the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Experience the departure from painting to space, from scenery to modern stage full of colour, form and zeitgeist.
The spirit of optimism of the 1920s not only shaped fashion and architecture, but also fundamentally changed the theatre. In this event, you can discover the advances of the time and experience how the stage reinvented itself. Together with the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, the TMD is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the stage design professorship. With the appointment of Walter von Wecus as the first professor of stage design in 1926, the spirit of the Weimar Republic also became visible on the stage. While painted backdrops still dominated around 1900, modern stage spaces with bright colours, clear lines and geometric shapes were now created. The costumes also picked up on the aesthetic trends of the 1920s and reflected the zeitgeist in their cut and design. This makes it clear how strongly art and society are linked and how the stage became a mirror of an entire era. (Source: Art:walk Festival)
