'The brush was not the point' brings together seven artistic perspectives spanning more than five decades.
The exhibition explores painting beyond the notion of the virtuoso brushstroke – as a field shaped in equal measure by material, memory, repetition, quotation, chance and omission.
The historical starting point is a group of works by Georg Baselitz from the 1970s. From there, the exhibition extends to the present day with David Ostrowski’s two-part work from 2026. Between these positions, Sophie Barber, Joe Bradley, Michaela Eichwald, Cosima zu Knyphausen and Gina Kuschke understand painting as a process of remembering, reworking, layering and reducing.
Across the generations, figuration and abstraction repeatedly converge. Art history is referenced and rewritten; images emerge and vanish; and supposed mistakes become productive choices.
The title is not a rejection of painting. On the contrary: it asks what painting can become when the brush is no longer understood as its defining prerequisite. (Source: Galerie Meierbach)
