Drummers are usually hard to miss. Tilo Weber, on the other hand, is quiet. And yet he has a presence like almost no other drummer.
He is always opening doors to something new and does not allow himself to be pinned down to one style. He is just as open to chamber music as he is to free improvisation, electronic music, pop, hip-hop or swing. Since 2023, he has enjoyed a close artistic collaboration with PULSE, a progressive ensemble that sometimes expands the classical string quartet line-up to include synthesisers and electronics and allows musical ideas to flow freely across genre boundaries. Violinist Johannes Haase, violinist Susanne Zapf, violist Yuko Hara and cellist Jakob Nierenz commissioned a composition from Tilo Weber, which they premiered together in December 2023 in the Sendesaal Bremen. The work "rainbows" was nominated for the German Jazz Award in the composition category in 2025. Tilo Weber already won the German Jazz Award for Arrangement of the Year in 2022. He combines open forms, pulsating Gnawa rhythms and innovative playing techniques to create a multi-layered whole. He adds Indonesian gamelan timbres to his drums and lets them blend transparently with the string sounds. In October 2026, the first joint album of the unusual string quartet and percussion line-up will be released on the Boomslang Records label. (Source: asphalt Festival gGmbH)
