Düsseldorf is a compact city. In the city centre, all of the attractions are particularly close together. If you’d like an overview of the highlights, from the Old Town to Königsallee and the Rhine promenade, then our one-hour ‘entry-level’ tour provides essential reference points for exploring Düsseldorf.
These days, all that hints at the city’s origins as a small fishing village is the ‘dorf’ in Düsseldorf. Now it is a verdant conurbation on the Rhine, as well as an international centre of the arts. The Altstadt (Old Town) with its churches, city hall and many cultural venues is the perfect place to trace the history of art in Düsseldorf, from Jan Wellem, the art-loving 17th century Elector, to the influential 20th-century artist Joseph Beuys.
The Altstadt is also known as ‘the world’s longest bar’. In its traditional brewpubs, history is distilled into the typical Rhineland outlook on life in which the (altbier) glass is always half full. The narrow lanes and alleys contain around 260 pubs, bars and restaurants, all within just half a square kilometre. Surely some sort of record!
The number of designer boutiques on Königsallee, Düsseldorf’s legendary shopping street, is no less impressive, and the groundbreaking architecture of the Kö-Bogen ensemble completes this taster tour of Düsseldorf’s city centre.
